History
Arnhem was first mentioned in 893 under the name Oppidium Arnoldi Villa . The foundation of the city can be considered the year 1233 , when Otton II , Count of Geldern from Zutphen granted Arnhem city privileges.
Arnhem joined the Hanseatic League in 1443. In 1473 he was captured by the Duke of Burgundy, Charles I the Bald.
In 1514, Charles of Egmont , Duke of Geldern , recaptured the city from Burgundy; in 1543 he passed to Emperor Charles V.
Arnhem entered the Union of Utrecht in 1579 and became part of the Republic of the seven united provinces of the Netherlands in 1585.
France captured the city in 1672–1674 and in 1795–1813. At the beginning of the 19th century, the former city fortifications were almost completely demolished so that the city could expand.
In the 19th century, it became a fashionable resort town famous for its picturesqueness. Here, as in The Hague , rich people from former "sugar barons" or planters who came from overseas colonies settled. Even now, the city is famous for its parks and green spaces.
In September 1944, during the operation “Market Garden”, a large Anglo-American landing was landed here and during the Dutch operation the city became the site of fierce fighting.
