Plainfield is a city in Union County , New Jersey , USA. According to the 2010 census , the population of the city increased to a record 49,808 people [1] . The inhabitants of Plainfield called the city "The Queen City" ( The Queen City ) [2] .

History
It was founded in 1684 by the Quakers [3] , received the status of the city in 1869. Plainfield was formed as a village on April 5, 1847 from part of the village of Westfield.
Since 2011, the mayor of the city is Sharon M. Robinson-Briggs (her term of office ends December 31, 2013) [4] .
