Amateur career

He spent a long amateur career, twice became the champion of Argentina. At international tournaments did not reach great heights.

Professional career

Welterweight Category

On February 7, 2009, the fight for the world champion title in the first welterweight category according to the WBA between Maidana and Andrey Kotelnik took place . After 12 rounds, Kotelnik won a separate decision. Despite the fact that the Maidan dominated for most of the battle, the judges gave the victory to Kotelnik. This decision raised many questions among boxing fans regarding its fairness [1] .

The first battle of Maidana in the United States was a duel against Victor Ortiz for the title of interim world champion according to the WBA. The fight took place in Los Angeles on June 27, 2009. In the first two rounds of the Maidan, he knocked down three times, but was able to recover and won the fight. In the first and sixth rounds, Ortiz also knocked down, received a cut over his right eye and in the sixth round, the doctor stopped the fight, Maidana defeated by technical knockout [2] .

After the battle with Ortiz, rumors circulated that Amir Khan would become Maidana’s next opponent [3] . But Khan chose to meet Paul Malignaggi in his first fight in the United States. Maidana won by knockout over the following rivals: Panamanian William Gonzalez and undefeated Dominican Victor Cayo [4] .

On August 28, 2010, Marcos defeated American boxer Demarcus Corley in the second defense of the interim world champion according to the WBA .

Championship fight with Amir Khan

On December 11, 2010, Maidana entered the ring for the title of full-fledged world champion with Briton Amir Khan . Many experts considered this fight the first truly serious test for Khan. Already in the 1st round, Khan was able to send Maidan half a ring with a blow to the hull and in the 2nd round he tried to finish off the enemy, but already in the 3rd round Maidan acted as a battle aggressor. In the 5th round, the referee took a point from Maidana for an elbow strike. Further confrontation took place in a mutually acute and competitive struggle with a slight advantage of Khan. At the end of the fight, Maidan tried his best to knock out the opponent, but in the end, after 12 rounds, Khan's victory was announced by unanimous decision.

Fight with Eric Morales

In April 2011, Maidana entered the ring against the legendary Mexican boxer Eric Morales . At stake was the interim WBA welterweight title. In the 1st round, Morales received a serious dissection in his right eye, which even before the gong was almost closed by edema. In round 2, Eric shocked Marcos, but against the background of the Mexican dominance, this was very little. The third round of logging went to Eric, who was somewhat warmed up and was skilled at using the β€œspread” counterpart to his advantage. The 4th round was equal, but the Maidan left due to the number. But already in the 5th three-minute period, Morales showed the former class, taking it beautifully in the wheelhouse due to much better equipment and, as a result, accuracy with blows. The 6th and 7th rounds were equal: Maidana was taken at the expense of the bulk, Morales was more mean, but accurate. But already in the 8th round, Eric greatly shocked a tired opponent with a left hook, declassifying the Maidan in all respects. The 9th round was again equal - Maidana recovered and leveled the fight. In the 10th round, Morales beat the tired Argentinean almost to choice, but at the end he missed a serious attack, and spent the 11th round on vacation, giving it to the chaotically attacking Maidan. The 12th round was cutting in the oncoming courses. The formal score of the judges was as follows: 114-114 and 116-112 (twice) in favor of the Maidana. Morales said after the battle that he strongly disagreed with the official verdict.

In July, the World Boxing Association named interim champion Marcos Maidan a full-fledged world champion.

In September 2011, Maidana was knocked out in the fourth round by Russian Peter Petrov (29-2-2). After defending the title, Marcos rose to the welterweight. Marcos Rene Maidana suffered a third defeat in the professional ring.

Welterweight

Fight with Devon Alexander

On February 25, 2012, in a rating duel, Maidana met with American star boxer Devon Alexander . The American was much more aggressive and active in the ring and beat the Argentine on points in almost all rounds.

Fight with Adrian Broner

On December 14, 2013, Maidana in the title fight met with the world champion in three weight categories, Adrian Broner. The younger and more promising Broner approached the fight in the rank of champion and favorite of bookmakers. The fight was exciting. Already in the first round of the Maidan attacked the American. In the second round, Broner was knocked down as a result of the left Maidana hook. The middle of the battle was with varying success. It seemed that Bronerr had managed to recover from the attacks of the Argentine in the initial rounds and even had some good points, but in the eighth round he was back on canvas. In the same round, a point was shot from Maidana for a header, as a result of which the American athlete crouched in pain (perhaps there was a simulation from Broner). In the following rounds, Adrian still had some good moments, but the Argentinean had much more. Championship rounds were held in intense competition. At the end of the battle, the applicant’s fatigue was noticeable, which nevertheless did not prevent him from carrying out many productive strikes and even shaking Broner with a good strike towards him in the twelfth round. In general, the whole battle went under the dictation of Marcos Maidana, who went ahead and threw many punches. As a result, a fair victory of the Argentine on points by a good margin.

Fighting Floyd Mayweiser

May 3, 2014 in Las Vegas, Marcos Maidana met with the undefeated American Floyd Mayweather . The first half of the battle turned out to be competitive. Maidan often managed to press Mayweather to the ropes and inflict hard blows. However, after round 8, Maidan began to show signs of fatigue, and Mayweather took control of the fight. One of the judges considered that the match was equal, but two others gave the victory to Mayweather. Score of referee notes: 117–111, 116–112, 114–114. Maidana in a post-match interview expressed confidence that he won the fight. In the statistics of hits on the CompuBox system, in a fight with Marcos Maidana, Floyd Mayweather missed the largest number of hits in his career - 221. Floyd himself carried out 9 more accurate hits - 230. But on the throws, the advantage was on the side of Maidana - 858 against 426 at Mayweather. More precisely in their actions, respectively, was Floyd.

On September 13, 2014, there was a rematch between Marcos Maidana and Floyd Mayweather, in which Mayweather already more convincingly defeated his opponent by points.
