Monument to the Heroes (Poznan)

Monument to the Heroes ( Polish: Pomnik Bohaterów ) - a monument located in Poznan , ( Poland ) in the territory of Fort Vinyara . The monument is dedicated to soldiers of the Red Army who died in the battles for Poznan in 1945.

History

In the battles for Poznan, about 10 thousand Soviet troops were killed. 5829 dead were buried in the cemetery, which is currently located near the monument. The remaining victims were buried in the Milostovsky cemetery . The monument to the heroes of the Red Army was created by sculptors Stanislav Pogursky and T. Plonchak in the autumn of 1945. The monument was erected with the direct participation of Soviet troops.

Description

The monument is an obelisk 23 meters high, located on an elevation. The lower part of the obelisk is decorated with bas-reliefs in the style of socialist realism. A wide staircase leads from the street of Army Poznan to the monument. In the lower part of the stairs on its left and right side are two howitzers with a caliber of 152.4 mm. Until 1989, the obelisk was crowned with a red star, which was removed and is currently stored in the Museum of the History of Poznan .
