History
The Finnish name is Patsassaari ( Fin. Patsassaari - Pillar Island ). Before the foundation of St. Petersburg, the island also had the Russian name Pillar Island . Both the Finnish and Russian names were given, probably in connection with the elongated shape of the island [1] .
The modern name was first mentioned in the "Accurate News of the newly built by His Majesty Tsarist Peter Alekseevich on the Great Neva River and the East Sea of the fortress and the city of St. Petersburg", written by a Dutch resident in 1713 . According to the author, “they say that his royal majesty used to have fun there sometimes, so the island was named after him” [2] However, the history of the island began back in 1643 [3] .
In the 18th century, warehouses with food and other goods were located on the island. In 1768, in the southeastern part of Petrovsky Island, a wooden palace was built for Empress Catherine II (burned down in 1912), a French-style park was built around it. Eight straight alleys diverged from the building. Two alleys stretched along the island, on the site of the former Petrovsky clearing, and then became Petrovsky Avenue .
In recent years, the island has experienced a boom in housing. According to the master plan for the development of St. Petersburg, one and a half million square meters should be built here before 2025. Half of them are residential: multi-apartment complexes will occupy 29% of the island. 14% will be given for public and business buildings, 20% will remain under the park and recreational facilities.
