In the first seasons, the focus was on the twins Brandon ( Jason Priestley ) and Brenda ( Shannen Doherty ) Walsh, who experienced a “ cultural shock ” after moving from Minneapolis to vibrant Los Angeles [2] [3] . In addition to typical teenage issues related to friendship and love, the series also touched on such important social issues as rape , alcoholism , domestic violence , anti-Semitism , drug addiction , bulimia , AIDS , abortion , teenage suicide , teenage pregnancy , raising a child in a same-sex family , gay rights and others. [4] [5]
The series became incredibly popular during the show in the summer of 1991 , when the channel began the so-called "summer season", while most of the broadcast shows in the summer period are a repetition of old episodes [6] . The following fall, the series became one of Fox's top-rated shows, making Jason Priestley and Luke Perry the idols of millions around the world [7] , as well as glorifying actresses Shannen Doherty , Jenny Garth and Tori Spelling , who also became teenagers' favorites. Despite this, the main composition of the series has repeatedly changed over the 10 years of the show. Garth, Spelling, Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green are the only actors who have not left the series [8] .
Story
The plot is based on the story of the Walsh family, who during the first seasons were central characters. A couple, Jim and Cindy, are moving with their two children, the twins Brenda and Brandon, from northern Minnesota to hot Beverly Hills in California. The family experiences a certain cultural shock, and the first season talks about the adaptation of heroes in a new place. First of all, it is difficult for children - they are surrounded by spoiled teenagers, sons and daughters of rich and famous people. The younger Walshs are simply fascinated by the vibrant life of the big city, but soon harsh reality will bring them back to earth. Despite the light, teenage character of the series, it nevertheless touched on many topical issues: a lack of attention from parents; first sexual experience; date rape; early alcoholism; cheating on control; AIDS and teenage pregnancy; racial inequality; wealth and glory. Jim and Cindy also face their own problems - Brenda is shy about her mother, and a crisis is brewing in the relationship between Jim and Cindy, which almost led to treason. In addition, Cindy is worried about the fact that Jim wants to get a housekeeper.
In the second and third seasons - telling about the last two years of training for the younger Walsh and their friends at the West Beverly Hills School - the characters also try to find the right way out of difficult situations. Brandon understands that nothing is given for free when he starts working at the Beach Club, and the local rich man offers him patronage, while pursuing selfish goals. Heroes first face death when Scott Scanlon, David Silver's best friend, dies due to a tragic accident. Heroes also learn to show compassion and help others.
Episodes that were released as part of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh seasons are told about the years of study at the University of California. During this period, everyone is trying to understand what he wants to achieve in life. Brenda chooses the stage of a theater actress; Brandon returns to journalism and enjoys politics; Andrea is engaged in medicine; David devotes himself to music, and Donna is fond of fashion, which inspires her to create her own clothing line. Meanwhile, the problems become more serious, as the heroes set off for free swimming, starting an independent life. In addition, the story moved from the Walsh family to the rest of the young characters - Kelly, Brandon, Dylan, Donna, Steve and others, since by that time the actors who played the roles of Jim, Cindy and Brenda Walsh had left the series. As a replacement for Brenda, the character was introduced to the show, Valory Malone, around whom most plot intrigues were built - in the series she is presented more like an anti-hero who just wanted to sympathize.
The last three seasons talked more about the personal conquests of the characters - both romantic and professional. Brandon and Steve open their newspaper, and Kelly and Donna - a fashion store. The characters Andrea and Valory by that time left the series, and Dylan returned in the 9th season. Also, after Valory leaves, the audience is introduced to Donna Martin's cousin, figure skater Gina Kincaid, who turns out to be Donna's half-sister on her father's side. In addition, new characters appear in the series - the son of millionaire Noah Hunter; an employee of the newspaper Steve and Brandon, Janet, whom Steve later marries, and the couple have a daughter, Maddy; and finally, lawyer Matt Dörning, with whom Kelly was engaged. [7] [8]
In the last episode of the series, which ended with the long-awaited wedding of Donna and David, the heroes of Brandon, Andrea, Valory, as well as several minor characters returned in the episodes.
Scene
- Walsh House ( eng. Casa Walsh / Walsh Family House ). The main action of the series takes place here. It was in this Spanish-style mansion that the Walsh family lived when they moved from Minnesota to Beverly Hills. Four years later, Brenda was the first to leave home, leaving to study in London. Now her room was occupied by Walsh's longtime girlfriend, Valerie Malone. After another year, Jim and Cindy leave for Hong Kong. Then Steve becomes Brandon's neighbor. A year after graduating from college, Brandon leaves Beverly Hills, and Steve becomes the full owner of the mansion. When he marries Janet and their daughter is born, the house becomes the "fortress" of the Sanders-Pine family.
- School of West Beverly Hills ( Eng. West Beverly High ) - alma mater of the main characters who spent the first three years of the series within the walls of the school.
- The University of California, California, is one of the main venues for the fourth and fifth seasons after the heroes finish school.
- Beach house ( English Beach House ). For all this a long time, a lot of people lived in the house. At first, Kelly, Donna and David shot it together when they went to college. After Donna breaks up with David, the young man moves, and Claire Arnold takes his place. Subsequently, as the guests in the beach house, many heroes of the series lived, among which, for example, Donna's sister, Gina.
- Dylan's House - it was here that Brenda and Kelly spent a lot of time in the arms of their beloved Dylan's.
- Beverly Hills Beach Club ( Beverly Hills Beach Club ) - the parents of almost all the characters in the series are members of this club. Brandon worked here for a long time, and Andrea was a kindergarten teacher at the beach club.
- Cafe "Peach Bone" ( Eng. The Peach Pit Cafe ). Its owner is Nat Bussicho, a true friend and comrade of the whole honest company. For many years, he owns this establishment, keeping the secret of making excellent peach pie and invigorating coffee. With the arrival of Valerie Malone, a nightclub, "After Midnight," opens next to the cafe. Nat is also a co-owner.
- After Midnight / Twilight Nightclub ( eng. Peach Pit After Dark ). At first, the hostess of the club was Valerie. Her partners in turn became Nat, Steve, David and Noah. The club had many famous guests - from Duncan Sheik to Christina Aguilera .

Basic composition
Eighteen-year-old Jenny Garth played the spoiled rich girl Kelly Taylor , who, as it turned out, had her own problems, including the reputation of an affordable girl, as well as the mother of an addict and an alcoholic [9] . It was with the performer of this role that the search for actors began. After a conversation with Spelling, Garth went outside and noticed how Spelling was watching her from the window, and then shouting to her: “Good job, baby!” - at this moment, the actress realized that she got the role in the series [10] . Karen Rosin says: “Kelly Taylor was a stereotypical bitch at the very beginning, but Jenny herself was a sweet girl - it was thanks to this that her character, in the end, changed” [11] .
Tories for the role of Kelly also passed and Tori Spelling under the pseudonym Toria Mitchell ( Eng. Toria Mitchell ) - the girl did not want to count on success just because her father is a famous producer - before that, she starred in many of her father's episodic roles [ 12] . Joanna Ray says that the set had to pretend that they did not know who they really were [13] . As a result, sixteen-year-old Tory got the role of Donna Martin, Kelly’s quiet friend [14] .
The next role was played by Brian Austin Green - he got the role of a primary school student, musician David Silver, in love with Kelly and dreaming of making friends with Steve [15] . Joanna Ray notes that she was “simply shocked by how this boy plays” [16] . Ian Ziering , who originally claimed the role of Brandon [17] , played Steve Sanders - a typical representative of the “golden youth”, the son of the famous actress, ex-boyfriend Kelly and Brandon’s new best friend [18] . Gabrielle Karteris played the editor of the school newspaper, one of the best students in the school, hiding the address of her real place of residence - if the school management finds out about this, the girl can be kicked out of West Beverly Hills [19] . Andrea falls in love with Brandon and quickly finds a common language with his sister Brenda, Kelly and the rest of the guys. Joanna Rey admits that Carteris really looks older, “but probably only on the screen — in life, she looked like a schoolgirl” [20] . Interestingly, the actress Carteris initially auditioned for the role of Brenda Walsh [17] .
By April 1990, after two months of ongoing casting, the entire cast was selected with the exception of two central characters - Brandon and Brenda Walsh. The project was on the verge of closure. At that moment, Tori Spelling literally saved the situation: she recommended that her father pay attention to the young actress Shannen Doherty , whom she saw in the movie “ Deadly Attraction ” [21] - after listening to the actress, he realized that he found the main character Brenda Walsh [22] , freedom-loving a girl who often goes against parents and public opinion. At first, life in Beverly Hills dazzles her, but later the girl realizes that everything has a flip side. The actress herself was a television veteran, starring in various family shows from the age of six [23] . Even then, the talent search agency noticed that it’s “not so easy to work with” [24] .
Tori also drew her father's attention to actor Jason Priestley when he starred in the sitcom Sister Kate [25] . Samples took place a week before the start of the main filming of the pilot episode. So the actor got the role of Brandon Walsh - the protagonist of the series. Brandon moves with his family from Minnesota and quickly makes new friends. Brandon is a fairly straightforward young man with clear views and a strong moral position [26] .
One of the most important decisions made by the scriptwriters was the appearance of a new provocative character in the show - the cool anti-hero Dylan Mackay [27] . Charles Rosin says: “We needed an atypical antagonist, a bad boy.” [28] Charles also adds that, despite the rumors that the character was named after singer Bob Dylan , the hero got his name in honor of actor Matt Dillon [29] . However, again, the casting problem arose in front of the film crew. “We wanted to show how smart this character is, so we wrote a monologue in which Dylan speaks French to someone,” says Rosin [30] . According to Rozin, they listened to twenty actors before they saw the performance of twenty-five-year-old worker Luke Perry, [31] who ultimately got the role of Dylan's “rebel for no reason”, with whom Brandon became friends. Unfortunately, the film crew’s misfortunes didn’t end there, according to Joanna Rey, soon after the casting, one of the channel’s leaders came to her office and said: “This is exactly what I don’t want to see,” showing Perry . As a result, the channel refused to pay Luke Perry's salary if he would appear on the show. Then Aaron Spelling himself undertook to pay the salary to the actor, as he was sure that the young Luke Perry would become the star of the show. According to Randy Spelling, Aaron said: “Perry is a charismatic guy, in some ways similar to James Dean ” [33] .
James Eckhouse played the role of the head of the Walsh families - demanding but fair Jim Walsh [34] , and the role of Cindy Walsh, his wife, went to actress Carol Potter [35] . All ten actors were members of the main cast for the first four years unchanged in this cast. Joe I. Tata played the role of Nat Bussichchio, the eldest fellow of the guys, as well as the boss of Brandon - the young man begins to work as a waiter in a cafe called Nat Peach Bone [36] . Although the actor in the series from the first season, he entered the main team only in the sixth. Douglas Emerson got the role of David’s eccentric best friend, Scott Scanlon [37] . The actor was a member of the main cast in the first season, and in the second he returned as a guest star. There was no official comment from the producers of the relative departure of Emerson from the series, but as it turned out, the actor did not just leave the series, but forever left his acting career - to this day, after Beverly Hills, 90210, Douglas Emerson did not play a role in any film and in no series, ceased to be an actor and joined the US Army [38] , and in 2002 became a sergeant in the Air Force. Emerson now lives with his wife Emily and two daughters in Colorado. [39]
Tiffany-Amber Thyssen joined the show for the fifth season as a replacement for Shannen Doherty - the actress played the role of Valerie Malone, a spoiled Buffalo girl who would later create a lot of intrigue in the plot of the series. The actress was a member of the main cast until her departure in the middle of the ninth season. Kathleen Robertson appeared in the series in the role of Claire Arnold, daughter of the rector of the University of California, in the fourth season, but entered the main team in the fifth - in this status she starred until her departure at the end of the seventh season. Musician Jamie Walters played Ray Prowitt, Donna's lover, in the fifth and sixth seasons as an actor in the main cast. Mark Damon Espinosa , who appeared in the fourth season as the bartender-lawyer Jesse Vazquez, from whom Andrea gave birth to her daughter Hannah, entered the main team in the fifth season, and left the show with Carteris at the end of the year.
Hilary Swank starred in the eighth season as Carly Reynolds's single mother, and Vincent Young also joined the cast in the eighth season. Vanessa Marcel and Daniel Cosgrove in the roles of figure skater Gina Kincaid and lawyer Matt Dörning, respectively, also entered the main cast of the show in 9-10 seasons, and Lindsay Price , who played journalist Janet Sosna in the eighth season, received a promotion and entered the main cast in the ninth season - in this status she starred until the close of the show.

Production
Initial Stage
In the late 1980s, three television giants reigned on television: CBS , NBC, and ABC , and Fox channel executives, represented by Barry Diller, wanted to find a hit that would help them expand this three leaders [46] . Popular youth projects of rivals showed that teenagers can be oriented as a strong audience, but Fox was afraid that they were late with the release of the youth show. Then the young screenwriter Darren Star came to leadership with a script for a pilot episode called Class Of Beverly Hills . In turn, the management turned to the famous producer Aaron Spelling , who glorified ABC with many shows for an adult audience, including Charlie's Angels , Love Boat and Fantasy Island [47] . At the same time, there was a lull in Spelling's career, and many doubted that the eminent producer would be able to regain his big name in the new decade, especially with material that he had not worked with before - youth drama [48] . When Spelling was approached with this offer, he was surprised: “Why me? What do I know about youth shows? ” [49] . Despite his doubts, Spelling got down to work and hired the twenty-seven-year-old Star , the author of the idea of the series and the future creator of the hits " Melrose Place " and " Sex and the City ", as a permanent screenwriter. According to Joanna Rey, director of casting, she considered the pilot's script “cute, but nothing happened in him” [50] . Actor James Eckhaus also noted that he was disappointed with the script of the pilot, although in his opinion, the script for the next episodes was much more interesting than the first one [51] .
Star showed the finished script to Spelling. The first thing Spelling did not like was the large number of protagonists - teenagers. The question followed: “Is it possible to introduce more adult characters into the plot?” But Star was firm: he was sure that this would play into the hands of the future success of the series. For advice, Aaron turned to his teenage daughter, Tori Spelling , asking if modern teens would be interested in watching such a show and received an affirmative answer [17] . In the end, under the pressure of arguments, Stara Spelling gave the green light to the shooting of the first episodes of the show. Soon, casting for roles in the series began.
Filming
The production of the series took place in the California district of Van Nuys. All 10 years of shooting took place in a pavilion equipped from a warehouse, and pornographic films were shot in the neighborhood [52] . On the same warehouse territory, scenes were filmed at the parking lot of the Peach Bone Cafe, as well as at the entrance to the After Midnight nightclub - the warehouses are located at District 15000 address on Calvert Street . The entrance to the night club can still be seen from the side of the alley. Since then, these rooms have been used for the filming of shows such as Jericho , in which James Ackhaus played the guest role. Until February 2010, the Melrose Place series produced by The CW was also filmed in these pavilions. In the first episode, the facade of one of the mansions in the Brentwood private sector in California was used as the Walsh house. In the following episodes, they rented a house in Atladen, and Dylan McKay's house was next door. In addition, for the filming of “Peach Bone” used the facade of a real restaurant “The Apple Pan” on Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles - three different buildings were used throughout the history of the series. When the plot in the Bone was repaired in the first season, the authors filmed the Rose City Diner in Pasadena. Filming of the scenes of the “Beach Club” took place in Santa Monica on the beach “Sand and Sea” ( English Sand & Sea ) - it was also used for filming the show “ Saved By Call ”.
The Beverly Hills High School Facade, located in 90212, has become the fictional West Beverly School. There are three indexes in Beverly Hills, and the most prestigious houses are located in the 90210 area, although the school itself is located at a different address - the scenes inside West Beverly were shot at the Torrance High School in California, where middle-aged children study.

Randy ).
Episodes
Встречается также вариант, где сдвоенный пилотный эпизод «Class Of Beverly Hills» называют нулевым эпизодом, а отсчёт начинается с эпизода «The Green Room».
Также в список иногда включают 3 специальных эпизода-ретроспективы, показанных в период трансляции сериала — «The Best Moments Of 90210», «Our Favorite Moments» и «The Final Goodbye» [62] — в итоге количество эпизодов меняется до 296 [63] [64] .

В передаче прозвучали песня «I Will Remember You» в исполнении Сары МакЛахлан , «Young Americans» в исполнении Дэвида Боуи , инструментальная версия «Love Is A Battlefield» из репертуара Пэт Бенатар , а также композиция «Freeze-Frame» в исполнении группы «The J.Geils Band». Branches
Melrose Place
In 1993, Star and Aaron Spelling in the wake of their successful brainchildren put on a new series - " Melrose Place ", which takes place in one of the districts of Beverly Hills. It is noteworthy that in the first episodes of the series, many characters of the original series appear - Kelly, Donna, David and Steve.
Model Agency
The show “ Model Agency ” tells about a group of model girls and people from their environment - the show was a spin-off of the drama “Melrose Place”. Hillary Michaels ( Linda Gray ), Amanda Woodward's mother, and model Sarah Owens appeared on the series, both characters appearing in Melrose Place. In addition, the Grant Show also appeared on the series as guest of the role of Jake Hanson, starring in three franchise shows, including Beverly Hills, 90210. Despite the strong cast, the series was not able to achieve the success of its predecessors, and was closed after the first season. Also on television, the final episode was not shown, which aired during a replay on cable channel E! .
90210: The New Generation
The premiere of the third spin-off “ 90210: New Generation ” took place on September 2, 2008 on The CW channel [85] . The plot was built around the Wilson family, who moved from Kansas to Beverly Hills to take care of her grandmother, a famous movie actress suffering from alcoholism. [86] In the pilot episode, the heroine Hannah Zuckerman-Vazquez (daughter of Andrea and Jesse) appears, and the grown-up Eirin Silver , the sister of Kelly Taylor , becomes one of the main characters in the series.
In the first season of the show, Jenny Garth [87] , Shannen Doherty [88] , Tori Spelling [89] , Joe I. Tata [90] and Anne Gilespie [91] starred. Jason Priestley took the director's chair of one of the episodes, however, on this his appearance in the show was limited [92] .
Melrose Place (2009)
The development of the fifth spin-off called Melrose Place was also undertaken by The CW channel [93] [94] . The series was more of a sequel, in which the focus was again on residents of an apartment complex in West Hollywood, which was owned by Sidney Andrews - the alleged deceased heroine of the original series. In any case, in the pilot episode, Sydney is killed, and the main plot of the series is built around the personality of the killer [95] [96] [97] . The series was well received by critics, but due to low ratings it was closed after eighteen episodes were released. In addition to new characters, old heroes appeared in the series performed by Thomas Colabro, Heather Locklear, Daphne Zunigi, Josie Bisset and Laura Leighton as Sidney.
Continuation
On February 27, 2019, it became known that the FOX channel ordered the first season of the “90210” show of 6 episodes [98] , which will premiere in the summer - a promotional video was published on YouTube on the studio’s channel [99] .
