Story
Felix Bush, owning vast lands and having a good condition, nevertheless lives as a hermit in the forest and eschews the inhabitants of the neighboring village for several decades. There are strange rumors around him that he might be guilty of some heinous crime. Children sometimes throw stones at his windows, but adults are afraid of him, because he is ready to defend his solitude with a gun in his hands. Therefore, the residents of the city are much surprised when Bush appears once in the city, and are even more surprised by the reason for the appearance. Bush wants to arrange a funeral for himself, still alive, and is ready to invite anyone who knows at least one dark story about him - this is just an excuse to finally share “his story”, his vision of the events that led him to hermitage, and about which he still refused to talk to anyone. The local pastor refuses to organize a strange funeral, with the “dead person” present, but unprincipled businessman Frank Quinn, the owner of the funeral home, with his young assistant, is getting down to business. In order to attract participants to the funeral, Bush organizes a lottery, in which all his lands will be his winnings, and he will not trust his money to the bank, but to Frank Quinn, with whom he has something in common - his past is also not entirely clear (though, perhaps not as dark as Bush), and he is also a bachelor.
An unexpected difficulty arises - a long-time acquaintance of Felix Bush, a pastor from a neighboring town, refuses to come to the funeral party. Bush once built a church where he has since served, but for the pastor this is not an excuse to fulfill Bush’s request to tell a story instead. The pastor insists that Bush tell her himself, and he leaves in a rage. The situation is complicated after several meetings between Bush and his former lover Matty Darrow, who turns out to be the sister of the tragically dead young woman, whose portrait Bush keeps in her home and about the circumstances of her death, which she requires Felix to tell. He refuses again, Matty kicks him out, after which Bush demands that Quinn stop preparing for the funeral. But Quinn and his assistant have already put a lot at stake, so they save the situation independently from each other and even contrary to each other. The pastor manages to persuade him to come, although the latter still insists that Felix decide and tell the story himself.
When the holiday comes, the pastor gives the floor to Bush and he tells the story. In his youth, he was friends with Matty, but accidentally met her sister - already a married woman by that time, and an affair began between them. Bush agreed with his mistress to flee the town, but on the night that was supposed to happen, she did not come to the meeting. Bush came to her house, where, to his horror, he discovered that a jealous husband mortally wounded his mistress, and then set fire to the house. Defending himself from his husband, Bush killed him. The bodies of both her husband and her lover burned in the fire , so there was no evidence against Bush, but his conscience continued to torment him, and he condemned himself to voluntary exile in the forest.
Having poured out his soul, Bush is locked in his house, the celebration continues without his presence. The next day, Bush goes into the forest and sees a vision in the distance - his long-dead lover . This is his last vision before death . The film ends with his funeral - this time real.
