History

The song was written during the period when Plant and Page moved to the Bron-Yr-Aur cottage in Wales in early 1970 to take a break from the exhausting schedule. Recorded at Olympic Studios ( London ), consolidated at [1] .

Description

The composition and lyrics are a potpourri of famous blues songs, including “Shake 'Em on Down” by Bucca White , “ I Feel So Bad ” by Chuck Willis , “Traveling Riverside Blues” by Robert Johnson et al. [2] , however on the original cover the album about the song was written “folk, arranged by Charles Obscure” (Charles Obscure is Paige’s comic pseudonym). The song is dedicated to blues singer Roy Harper , a long time collaborator with Led Zeppelin. He is also known for playing lead vocals in the song “ Have a Cigar ” from Pink Floyd 's Wish You Were Here album .

Harper recalls [3] :

I went to the [Led Zeppelin] office in Oxford Street, where Peter Grant and Mickey Bridge were. And one day Jimmy Page was there and handed me a new record. I just said thanks and put her arm. Jimmy said, “Look at that.” So I twisted it and put it back under my arm. Very beautiful and all that. Then he said, "look at this." Then I discovered Hats Off To (Roy) Harper. I was very moved.

Original text
I used to go up to [Led Zeppelin's] office in Oxford Street, where Peter Grant and Mickie Most would be. And one day Jimmy was up there and gave me the new record. I just said thanks and put it under my arm. Jimmy said "Look at it". So I twirled the little wheel around and put it back under my arm. Very nice and all that. So he went "Look at it!" Then I discovered Hats Off To (Roy) Harper. I was very touched.

Jimmy Page said of the song that it is dedicated to all those people who hold their own opinion and have the courage not to sell out [4] .

Concert Performances

“Hats Off to (Roy) Harper” was performed by the group at potpourri concerts with the songs “ How Many More Times ” and “ Whole Lotta Love ”, but it was never performed separately and intact. Potpourri with heavy songs is explained by the desire of the group to get a more acoustic sound of the early songs [2] .
