Latin name
Polyrhachis schellerichae Dorow, 1996 [1]

Description

It differs from other species of the genus Polyrhachis by a very elongated elongated head shape (almost rectangular), especially in females (more than three times as long as its width). The body length of the workers is about 9 mm (8.72–9.79), females - about 13 mm (12.62–13.57), males - about 9 mm (7.94–9.22). The length of the workers' head is 2.18-2.44 mm (width 1.25-1.41), females 3.33-3.58 mm (width 1.41-1.60). The ratio of the width and length of the head (CI) for workers is 54–58, and for females it is 40–46. The chest is narrow, the widest in the pronotum, which in the working individuals is armed with two spikes directed forward. Two more longer and sharp spikes (directed backwards) are located on the workers' back chest. The petiole knot also carries two spikes directed backwards. Females have only two small spines on petiole, and males lack them. Mandibles with 5 teeth. The main body color from black to brownish. Nest in the internodes of bamboo . [1] [2]

The species belongs to the subgenera Myrmhopla and to the hector-group species group . [one]

Etymology

P. schellerichae is named after researcher Angela Schellerich (Miss Angela Schellerich), who discovered an anthill in 1993 and collected a type series of the species. [one]
