Theater History

In 1885, the Valmiera Latvian Society, on the site of the former Dorpat Bastion, built a building for the performance of the Latvian amateur troupe. On March 29, 1919, the production of “The Sunken Bell” by Gerhart Hauptmann , directed by J. Zarinsh, marked the appearance of a new professional group.

After the first season there was a break and, received a new name theater, continued to work in 1923. The troupe almost entirely consisted of amateurs, only the main director and the leading actor received wages.

By 1930, the situation improved and the theater took a stable position. The repertoire policy of the theater is characterized by a significant presence of plays by Latvian authors.

The performances are held in the Great, Round, Small Halls and on the Stage of the Great Hall.
