Born into a peasant family. Educated at the Tokyo Commercial Institute, after which in the period from 1924 to 1938 he taught economics and history at the Seoul College "Enkhi". Member of the revolutionary, national liberation struggle of the Korean people against Japanese colonial rule, in connection with which in 1938-1941 he was imprisoned in a Japanese prison. After the liberation of Korea from Japanese troops in 1945, Paek Nam Un became chairman of the New People’s Party of South Korea, then deputy chairman of the Central Committee of the Labor Party of South Korea and chairman of the Democratic National Front of South Korea.
In 1947, Baek Nam Un moved to the north of the Korean Peninsula. Since 1948, he is a deputy to the DPRK Supreme Assembly. In 1948-1956, he served as Minister of Education of the DPRK. In 1953, a scientist was elected a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the DPRK, in 1956–1961 he was the president of the Academy. In June 1958, Baek Nam Un became a foreign member of the USSR Academy of Sciences [2] .
Since 1956, at the Third Congress of the Labor Party of Korea , Baek Nam Un has been elected as a candidate member of the TPK Central Committee. In 1961, at the IV Congress of the WPK, he became a member of the CC of the TPK. Between 1961 and 1967, Paek Nam Un was the Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People’s Assembly . From December 1967 he is its chairman, that is, he formally holds the post of head of state.
Baek Nam Un was one of the first Marxist historians of Korea who worked in this field as early as the 1930s. During this period, two of his foundational works are published - The Socio-Economic History of Korea (Tokyo, 1933) and The Socio-Economic History of Feudal Korea (vol. 1, Tokyo, 1937).
