History and Formation
The division is also known in some sources as the 26th SS Waffen-Grenadier Division “Gombes” ” [1]
Like the 25th SS Waffen-Grenadier Division (Hungarian No. 1) , it was formed on December 27, 1944 at the Neuhammer training ground in Silesia . In early January, the division was transferred for further training and weapons in Ziddratz . The division consisted mainly of military personnel of the Hungarian army and mobilized citizens of Hungary . In contrast to the SS formations, which consisted of servicemen of the so-called “northern race”, the division had the word “waffen-” in the name, the ranks also began with this word.
In February 1945, both Hungarian SS divisions formed the 17th Army Corps (Hungarian) , which did not complete its formation, which was prevented by the Soviet winter offensive in Silesia. The division retreated west and surrendered to American troops in early May 1945 in the Frankenburg area.
