DescriptionChilean grass cutter reaches a length of 18 to 20 cm [2] . Wings are short, eyes are red. The elongated tail is black with a red base. The upper body of the male is brown with dark stripes. Crest red-brown. Cheeks are black with white spots. The beak is short and thick, with its help the bird can peck buds, leaves and shoots of plants.
There is sexual dimorphism . Females lack a red-brown crest. Their forehead and throat are brown.
DistributionChilean grass cutter is common in southwestern South America. It lives on the edges of the forest and in the river valleys in Chile and in the west of Argentina. The area of distribution extends from Magallanes & La Antarctica-Chilena to Atacama and from Santa Cruz in Argentina to Mendoza . In the Falkland Islands, the species rarely appears.
LifestyleChilean grass cutter feeds mainly on grass, buds, young shoots, leaves, fruits and berries. Insects and their larvae are also present in a small amount in his diet. Especially the brood eats them.
The nest is built on trees or bushes. In clutch from 2 to 4 eggs.
