Location

The Verkhnekalar depression is located between the Udokan ridge (from the north) and the Kalarsky ridge (from the south). The basin has a latitudinal stretch from the lower reaches of the China River (in the west) to the watershed of the Kalar and Kalakan rivers (in the east). The total length of the depression is about 45 km, the width varies from 2 to 8 km.

Geology

The basin is composed of sedimentary formations of the Middle Upper Jurassic age (with coal deposits ), which are overlain from above by continental Cenozoic sediments of insignificant thickness. The foundation of the cavity belongs to the Mesozoic ; further formation began in Neogene - Quaternary and continues to this day.

Hydrography and landscape

The lowest part of the basin is occupied by the Kalar River and its tributaries ; the water edge of these rivers is 1200–1400 m. On the bottom, and especially along the sides and branches of the basin, there are lakes of glacial origin. The prevailing type of landscape is mountain taiga , sometimes combined with gauze.
