Biography
He received his primary education in schools at the churches of Stela and Domnica Belasha in Bucharest . He was a brother of the Kelderushani Monastery (1854-1857), tonsured a monk at the Chernik monastery in March 1858.
March 9, 1858 ordained to the rank of Hierodeacon . He served in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Bucharest. Since 1867 - archdeacon , since 1869 - hieromonk , since 1870 - the great ecclesiarch and protosinkell, since 1873 - archimandrite .
On February 23, 1875, he was consecrated bishop of Pitestia, vicar of Arges.
In 1875-1876 he temporarily headed the Arges diocese. On March 14, 1876, he was intronized as the ruling bishop of Argesh.
He was engaged in the restoration of many churches, including in Curtea de Arges and in the monastery of Calderushani, supported cultural and philanthropic societies, and allocated scholarships to students.
On May 18, 1893 he was elected Metropolitan Primus of the Romanian Orthodox Church; on May 21, he was intronized .
In the spring of 1896, under pressure from the country's liberal government, some members of the Holy Synod brought a series of charges against Gennady in violation of the church charter. May 20, 1896 removed from the department, settled in the monastery Kelderushani. He was vigorously defended by the poet Alexander Macedonski in print.
After the Conservative government came to power in December 1896, the Holy Synod was forced to cancel its decision. However, Gennady resigned on December 4 and remained in the Kelderushani monastery, where he was rector from 1905 and his death.
He died suddenly on August 31, 1918, during a visit to the nursing home he founded. He was buried in the narthex of the cathedral temple of the Kelderushani monastery.
