Sodium Metaphosphate

Sodium metaphosphate is an inorganic compound, a salt of an alkali metal of sodium and metaphosphoric acid with the formula NaPO 3 , white amorphous or crystalline, soluble in water. It is a polymer of Na n (PO 3 ) n , where n = 1000 ÷ 10000. Oligomers with n = 3 and 4 were isolated; they form crystalline hydrates .

  • Neutralization of metaphosphoric acid with sodium hydroxide . At 0 ° С oligomers are obtained, at 500-600 ° С - polymers:

  • Effect on heating of phosphoric acid on sodium salts:

Sodium metaphosphate forms a white amorphous or crystalline powder.

Oligomers form crystalline hydrates Na 3 P 3 O 9 • 6H 2 O, Na 4 P 4 O 12 • 4H 2 O.
