Strange rumors go about things happening around the Derceto mansion, which was built somewhere in the vast expanses of Louisiana . So no one was surprised by the strange and terrible suicide of its owner.

The police did not take long to do this, and the locals quickly forgot about it. The mansion remained uninhabited, at least at first glance.

The game character is a private detective, Edward Carnby , who is hired by a collector to describe the property in the mansion. The second version of the game character is the niece of the owner of the mansion, Emily Hartwood, who is just curious to find out what really caused the uncle's suicide. But as soon as the player crosses the threshold of the mansion, extremely strange things begin to happen. Something massive beats through the window, the floorboards creak below, and the escape paths are cut off. There is no choice - you have to go forward, take a step into the dark. And over time, the player learns a lot of information about the fate of the mansion and the fact that Derseto was built by a certain Elijah Pickford, who turns out to be a rebirth of a pirate named Ezechiel Pregzt , nicknamed Bloody Ezek ( Bloody Ezech ).

The first part is thematically related to the works of G.F. Lovecraft . The rather rich (by the standards of a computer game) library of Derseto contains about 20 books that resonate with the creations of this author. In fairness, it should be noted that all books are fictional and for the most part abound in anachronisms and various kinds of historical and logical errors, which, quite possibly, was included in the intentions of the authors of the game.

After the events described in the first part , Edward Carnby gained a reputation as a specialist in paranormal phenomena. Not surprisingly, it was him who was sent to hunt for an elusive smuggler, nicknamed One-Eyed Jack, who had abducted Grace Saunders. However, Carnby was prompted to take up this business rather by the disappearance of his colleague, Ted Striker ( Ted Striker ) ^[2] .

The game is very different from the first part. From the very beginning, Carnby receives a powerful weapon in the game - the Thompson submachine gun. All locations - from a frightening garden with a turfy labyrinth to an ancient pirate ship buried in a cave, create an atmosphere of an enchanted place where something was hidden that dates back to the heyday of piracy, and not to the beginning of the 20th century. Zombies , ghosts, monsters, pirates - this is not the whole list of evil spirits that the main character will face. Quiet corridors and deserted dungeons cause goosebumps. Sometimes you have to play for Grace. In addition to One-Eyed Jack, Edward Carnby has to deal with a voodoo practicing witch named Elisabeth Jarret , who worked in the past on plantations, but then escaped from slave owners and joined the pirates of One-Eyed Jack.

Also included in the CD edition of the first and second parts is the adventure game Jack in the Dark, made during the development of Alone in the Dark 2, where a player in the person of Grace Saunders ends up in a mysterious toy store during Halloween. Grace will have to rescue Santa Claus himself from the captivity of toys, led by a snuffbox jack ^[3] - a toy with the head of One-Eyed Jack.

Edward Carnby is still alive and continues to privately investigate various paranormal phenomena. At the same time, Emily Hartwood, present in the first part and missing in the second, decided to make a career in Hollywood. Her first project is a western , which she shoots in a real abandoned town of that time, bearing the grim name Slaughter Gulch ( gulch from the English - “gorge”, slaughter from the English - “massacre”).

This town was once built by the ruthless killer Jebediah “Jed” Stone on the sacred land of the Indians . Stone, with the support of his gang, mined gold and ruled the city and its environs with an iron hand until he was killed by rebellious residents and advocates of the law. Emily and her film crew mistakenly awaken Stone’s gang, and they again take up their bloody deeds.

And again secrets, zombies and ghosts. And again, adventures in abandoned terrain and unpleasant dungeons. The dilapidated houses, the old, dusty interiors of the saloon and other buildings of Sloter Galcha, the dark mines of the mines and even the secret laboratory are all perfectly drawn and if it doesn’t make you want to play the game again, then at least immerses you in the atmosphere of an abandoned town living its life . Traps, puzzles have also developed. Incorrect movement can easily lead to death.

In terms of the graphic component, the game is expressly different from the previous parts. Charles Fiske, a friend of Edward, died. Edward didn't like that at all; a brief investigation led him into the lair of a strange Morton family, whose paranormal activity is highly suspicious. Together with the girl an anthropologist, he will go to the island of Shadows, where very strange things are happening. The new opponents in 4 parts of the game will be shadows - mystical and frightening creatures. There are two options for the game: for the girl and for Carnby. Together they will have to figure out the fate of the Morton family, the origin of the terrible shadow monsters, and their own fate.

In the fall of 2014, the owner of the rights to the Atari game series announced his intention to reissue the original Alone in the Dark game with the subtitle Illumination (along with another horror game Haunted House ). The remake was developed by the studio Pure FPS ^{[4] [1]} . The game was released on June 11, 2015 and, according to GameDeus.ru, received unfavorable press reviews with an average rating of 19% ^[5] .

According to the developer of the Pure FPS studio, this part tells about the great-grandson of Edward Carnby, whose name is Theodor Carnby, as well as about the great-granddaughter of Emily Hartwood, there are also two playable characters in the game, these are black priest and technician engineer girl of Asian descent.
