Biography
Ivan Fedorovich Birtsev was born on May 13, 1913 in the village of Palkino (now the Antropovsky District of the Kostroma Region ) in a peasant family.
Received primary education, lived in Leningrad . He was first a student, later working at the Optical and Mechanical Institute.
In 1932 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He graduated from the pharmaceutical school in the city of Pushkin, Leningrad region. In 1936 he graduated from the Leningrad Military Medical School. He participated in the Soviet-Finnish war, was the acting doctor of the battalion of the 257th rifle regiment of the 7th rifle division of the 7th army of the North-Western Front. Distinguished in battle at Lake Summanjarvi (now - Lake Beauty in the Leningrad region ) [1] .
February 13, 1940 Birtsev, despite the Finnish fire, carried the wounded from the battlefield and provided them with first aid. February 18 , despite the injury, continued to perform their duties. On February 21 - 22, Birtsev again received two injuries, but continued work at the medical center, directing the actions of the medical orderlies. He died in hospital on February 22, 1940, and was buried in a mass grave on the southern outskirts of Vyborg [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 11, 1940, the medicinal assistant Ivan Birtsev was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union for “the heroic feat manifested in the performance of military tasks of command on the front of the struggle against the Finnish White Guard”. A diploma on awarding the title was solemnly handed to his widow [1] .
Memory
- The name of Birtsev is on a memorial plaque in the Military Medical Museum of the Ministry of Defense of Russia [1] .
