Pope Paul VI
The cardinals erected by Pope Paul VI - 143 of the prelate were elevated to the rank of cardinal at the six Consistories over the fifteen years of the pontificate of Paul VI. The number of cardinals began to be more than a hundred people. After the first consistory of Paul VI, the number of the Holy College was 103 cardinals. After the fourth consistory, held in 1973, the number of cardinals increased to 145 people. At the time of the death of Pope Paul VI, there were 130 cardinals in the College.
Paul VI introduces another innovation On October 1, 1975, the apostolic constitution of Romano Pontifici Eligendo is published, in which, as in the previously published motu proprio Ingravescentem Aetatem , it is declared that cardinals who have reached the age of 80 are deprived of the right to participate in the Conclave . The number of electoral cardinals is limited to 120 cardinals.
