Cairo International Film Festival ( Arabic: مهرجان القاهرة السينمائي الدولي , Cairo International Film Festival ) is an annual international film festival held in the capital of Egypt , Cairo .

History
The Cairo International Film Festival was founded in 1976 and became the first international film festival held in the Arab world . In addition, it is the oldest and only international film festival recognized by FIAPF in the Middle East and Africa . One of the inspirers of the film festival was the critic Kamal el-Mullakh, who visited the Berlinale in 1975.
At the first festival in 1976, about 100 films from 33 countries were presented, 14 films from 14 countries competed for the main prize.
Since 1988, the Cairo Film Festival has been held at the Cairo National Cultural Center, in particular, at the Cairo Opera House .
Many stars of world cinema became guests and laureates of the Cairo International Film Festival: Omar Sharif , Claudia Cardinale , John Malkovich , Nicolas Cage , Sophia Loren , Gina Lollobrigida , Salma Hayek , Marcello Mastroianni , Kurt Russell , Peter O'Toole , as well as world famous cinema Robert Wise , Elia Kazan , Oliver Stone , Michelangelo Antonioni and many others.

The most honorable award of the Cairo International Film Festival is the Golden Pyramid .
