Biography and Creativity
Giovanni Boldini was born in Ferrara in 1842. The son of an artist. In 1862 he went to Florence for six years. He studied at the Florentine Academy of Arts . Met with other artists from the Macchioli group. Since 1869 he worked in London , where he gained fame as a portrait painter. In 1872 he settled in Paris and began to exhibit his work in the Salon. He was friends with Edgar Degas , John Sargent , Paul Elle . He became the most fashionable portrait painter in Paris at the end of the 19th century. He left portraits of many prominent figures of the Beautiful era , was one of the most famous and well-paid portrait painters of his time. In 1897, he held a solo exhibition in New York. He was awarded the Grand Prix at the World Exhibitions in Paris (1889, 1900). He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1895, 1903, 1905 and 1912.
