History

The name of the city is directly connected with the name of Sophia Charlotte - the wife of the Cyprinitan Brandenburg Frederick I , who became in 1701 the first king of Prussia . Sofia Charlotte received as a gift an estate with a small suburban building, rebuilt into the representative summer palace of Lutzenburg ( German: Schloss Lützenburg ).

After the early death of Sofia Charlotte, the Lutzenburg Palace in her honor was renamed the Charlottenburg Palace [1] .

From around the beginning of the 18th century , settlements around the Charlottenburg Palace were gradually expanding; by January 1, 1877 they had turned into the city of Charlottenburg, whose population by the end of the 19th century was already over 100,000.

The modern Berlin Technical University was built in the years 1878–1884 as a “Technical Higher School” ( German: Technische Hochschule ).

By 1893, Charlottenburg became the second largest city in the province of Brandenburg after Berlin .

Instead of the old Charlottenburg Town Hall , built in 1705, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the city , a new town hall with a majestic 88-meter tower was inaugurated in 1905 .

Since 1900, its own power plant began operating in Charlottenburg, which provided street lighting, the needs of households and industry [2] [3] .

In 1907-1908, Charlottenburg acquired its own gate , as opposed to the Brandenburg in Berlin.

By 1910, the population of Charlottenburg had increased to 306,000.

In the years 1911-1912, the building of the German Opera was built in the city. Initially, this theater was called the German Opera House ( German: Deutsches Opernhaus ).

In 1920, Charlottenburg was incorporated into Greater Berlin as a city district [4] .

Charlottenburg district as a result of the administrative reform of 2001 in the status of the district of the same name is included in the enlarged western capital district Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf [5] .
