Biography
The representative of the Polish-Lithuanian princely family Sapeg coat of arms " Fox ". The younger (fifth) son of Prince Adam Stanislav Sapegi (1828-1903) and Princess Yadviga Clementina Sapegi (nee Princess Sangushko ) (1830-1918).
He studied at the 4th Higher High School in Lviv , received a certificate of maturity July 8, 1886 . Entered the Law Department of the University of Vienna, but did not study here. From October 1886 to August 1887, he and his brother Jan Peter attended lectures at the local Institut Catholique in Lille. On the basis of documents from Vienna he studied at the Law Department of the Jagiellonian University, on July 26, 1888, passed the state exam. From October 1, 1890 to July 31, 1894 he studied theology. He was ordained deacon on October 1, 1893 in Lviv .
After theological research, the Lviv Catholic Archbishop Severin Titus Moravsky appointed him in 1894 as vicar of the parish in the city of Yazlovets . Here Adam Stefan Sapieha served as deacon of the boarding school for girls from the Zemyan (noble) families at the monastery of the Order of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Most Holy Virgin Mary (founder - Marcelina Darovskaya). He was dismissed from the post of vicar in 1895 , together with the Jesuit Martin Cherminsky went on a retreat in Upper Silesia in September of this year.
On September 23, 1897, Severin Titus Moravsky appointed him Vice-Rector of the Theological Seminary, Secretary of the Diocisian and Metropolitan Courts, Assistant Consist. March 4, 1914 became a secret adviser.
He did not join any of the political trends, did not believe the intentions of the government of Austria-Hungary.
On the death of Henryk Sienkiewicz, he allowed to hold a mournful mass for the deceased on November 20, 1916 , but refused the request of I. Paderevsky to bury the writer in the Mariyatsky church , saying that a special crypt should be built for the honored Poles.
He did not support the church policy of the government of the 2nd Polish – Lithuanian Commonwealth after the 1926 coup .
In letters to popes, Pius XI ( February 2, 1939 ) and Pius XII ( March 25, 1939 ) requested that he be relieved of his duties as archbishop of Cracow for health reasons. After some time, changed his mind about the situation in the country.
After the outbreak of the Second World War, the Archbishop of Krakow, Adam Stefan Sapega, remained in Krakow , not yielding to persuasion to leave Poland. The clergy ordered not to leave the parishes.
February 23, 1946 received the hat of Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, became a member of the Congregation of the Eastern Church, Seminary and Universities.
The 84-year-old Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha died at 7.15 am on July 23, 1951 in the Episcopal Palace in Krakow . The funeral ceremony began on July 25, lasted until the 28th. This speech was made by Polish primate Stefan Vyshinsky . He was buried in the Wawel Cathedral ( crypt under the "denomination" of St. Stanislav).
