History
It is located on the site of the Swedish fortified city of Nyenschanz ( Landskrona ).
The square got its name on November 12, 1962 . Her name, like the names of some other toponyms near this place, is due to the fact that the barracks of the Novocherkassky regiment were located nearby, where in February 1918 the first two rifle battalions of the Red Army were formed . Until 1946, the Leningrad region in which this place was located was called the Red Guards. Then the district was renamed Kalininsky, and in 1973 part of the Kalininsky district again became Krasnogvardeisky.
The construction of the right-bank part of the square was carried out in the mid-1960s (architects A.K. Barutchev , F.A. Gepner , A. Sh. Tevyan ), its ensemble, clear in terms of planning reception, consists of three seven-story buildings of the same type (houses 4-6), the average of which is curved according to the curved shape of the area. In the gaps between the buildings are Yakornaya Street and Sredneohtinsky Prospekt. In the early 1970s, similar to the architectural decision extended long residential buildings joined the central buildings, the ensemble was developed in the direction of Shaumyan Avenue and Bolsheokhtinsky Avenue. House No. 3, built in 1972 for the Central Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering (architects Kozyrev B.I., Kozulin A.I., Komarov Yu.V.), is located on the left bank of the square. It is crowned by a glazed prismatic tower (locals sometimes call it "TV" for its characteristic look, or quite exoticly - "Bull Tower"), which completes the prospect of Sredneokhtinsky Prospekt. Earlier on the site of the building was the church of St. Alexander Nevsky of the 145th Infantry Regiment of Novocherkassk.
On February 14, 1983, during the campaign to perpetuate the memory of the Secretary General of the CPSU Central Committee, L. I. Brezhnev , the square was renamed Brezhnev Square and a stone stele was erected on it. The name of the square was transferred to Novocherkassky Prospekt - it became known as Krasnogvardeisky. At the same time, the territory on the left bank of the Okhta River, behind the Komarovsky Bridge, previously belonging to Yakornaya Street, was annexed to the square.
April 4, 1988, Brezhnev Square was returned to its former name - Krasnogvardeiskaya.
