History
The airport was built by the Imperial Navy of Japan in 1937 on land, mostly confiscated from farmers according to the order of Emperor Hirohito . After the end of World War II , local residents regained their land and continued to engage in agriculture on it. The base was reopened in 1956 by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces , which once again took control of the land. Many farmers who live around the base refused to sell their land to the government.
Interest in the airport was expressed by the Malaysian AirAsia X service provider, as well as the Korean airline Asiana Airlines .
Since March 2011, flights to Shanghai operated at 80% capacity and flights to Kobe operated at 50% capacity. On March 11, 2011, the roof of one of the buildings was damaged by an earthquake, but has since been rebuilt.
A total of 860,000 people visited the airport during the first year and 203,070 people made flights.
