Gamma, Antonio

Antonio Gamma , also mistakenly Antonio Gamba - Swiss, conductor of the armies of Suvorov in the Swiss campaign of 1799 , a resident of the town of Altdorf . With the Russian army made the transition to the town of Chur, giving valuable advice.

During the campaign in 1799, Field Marshal Suvorov stopped in the town of Taverno, located 20 km from Bellinzona . He was received at his home by an old man of 65–70 years old, who fell in love with the Russian commander so much that, despite his age and forgetting about his family and household, he agreed to accompany Suvorov during the Swiss campaign. In the campaign, Gamma provided invaluable services of a translator and guide.

After the war he lived in Altdorf , where he died in old age.

On June 19, 1999, a monument to Suvorov was unveiled at the highest point of the St. Gotthard Pass . The composition includes Suvorov, riding a horse, and a foot Italian old man Antonio Gamma (sculptor - D. Tugarinov).
