History
On July 15, 1410 , the Battle of Grunwald took place near Stembark, in German literature called the Battle of Tannenberg or the First Battle of Tannenberg (the second in 1914).
Between Stembark, Lodwigovo and Ulnovo ( Polish Ulnowo ) there is a historical battlefield in which the combined Polish-Lithuanian-Russian army under the general leadership of Vladislav Jagiello defeated the crusaders of the Teutonic Order , led by the great magister Ulrich von Jungingen .
On August 14 - September 2, 1914, the Battle of Tannenberg (sometimes the Second Battle of Tannenberg) took place, which was part of the East Prussian operation of 1914 . In this battle, the troops of the German Empire defeated parts of the Russian Empire .
German troops were commanded by the future president of Germany, Paul von Hindenburg , after whose death his body was placed in the Tannenberg memorial, which had been built earlier in Tannenberg. Before the capture of East Prussia by the Red Army during the new East Prussian operation in 1945, the memorial was destroyed by the Germans, and the bodies of Hindenburg and his wife were transported to Marburg .
Operation Tannenberg was also named for this place.
