Biography

Jorge Goncalves made his debut for Peñarol at the age of 19. It was in this team that his father spent his entire career, becoming the 9-time champion of Uruguay and winning 3 Libertadores Cups. Jorge won significantly less trophies with his Aurinegros than his father, but there were glorious moments in his career. So, in 1987 , that is, a year after the debut, Goncalves became the owner of the Libertadores Cup, which to this day is the last in the club museum "Peñarola". In the same year, the Uruguayan team lost only in extra time in the match for the Porto Intercontinental Cup .

In 1988, Goncalves made his debut in the national team of Uruguay, but the defender did not work out in the main national team - until 1996, he spent only 9 games in the national team (however, in eight of them - in the starting lineup).

Goncalves twice won the Uruguayan championship with Peñarol - in the year of debut and in 1997, after returning to the team after five years of playing for other teams - the Mexican Cruz Asul, the Argentinean Ferrocaril Oeste, the Uruguayan River Plate and Cerro .

At the end of his career, he began to work as a coach. In the 2007/08 season, he headed the Montevideo Wanderers, the next season he headed Tacuarembo for three matches, after which he joined Diego Aguirre's coaching staff at Peñarole. At the end of February 2012, after the resignation of Gregorio Perez due to the unsatisfactory start of the team in the Libertadores Cup , he was appointed acting head coach of Peñarol [1] . Under the leadership of Gonçalves, Peñarol held one match, winning against Belle Vista on March 1 with a score of 4: 1 [2] . In the next match, the team was led by Jorge Da Silva, already officially approved as head coach.
