The Vatican is a city-state that emerged in 1929 .
The Vatican lacks the official language established by law. However, in accordance with paragraph 2 of the Legge sulle fonti del diritto of June 7, 1929 , the laws and legal acts of the state are published in Italian (such as the Supplemento per leggi e disposizioni dello Stato della Citta del Vaticano - supplement to Acta Apostolicae Sedis ) [1] .
The official website of the Vatican uses, in addition to Italian, English , French , Spanish and German [2] , but not Latin and Portuguese , used on the official website of the Holy See [3] .
Within the state uses a large number of languages. So, the soldiers of the Vatican Swiss Guard take an oath in the official language of their native canton : German, French or Italian [4] . The newspaper of the Holy See, L'Osservatore Romano , published in Italy , is published in English, German, French, Polish , Portuguese and Spanish. In July 2008, they were joined by the Malayalam. The most important documents of the Holy See, published in Acta Apostolicae Sedis , are written in Latin. From the moment of the emergence of the state, acts are also written in Italian, Greek , German and French [6] .
