Biography
He survived the siege winter of 1941-1942 . He was evacuated in the summer of 1942 through Ladoga. He returned to Leningrad in 1945.
He graduated from a vocational school. He worked as a turner, drilling foreman in the geological party.
After serving in the army, he graduated from the journalism department of LSU . He worked in the district, factory and university newspapers.
In 1965, the debut short story book, The Door Stays Open, was released.
In 1968, for authorship of a collective letter protesting against the trial of A. Ginzburg, Y. Galanskov and other human rights defenders were expelled from the CPSU and dismissed from their jobs. He was a sailor, a boiler room operator, a watchman.
In June 1976, under the editorship of Boris Ivanov (with the participation of the poet and human rights activist Yulia Voznesenskaya ), the first issue of the Samizdat literary magazine "Clock" was published (published in Leningrad in 1976-1990).
One of the founders of the Andrei Bely Prize (established in 1978 by the editors of the Leningrad Samizdat literary magazine "Hours" ). The founders of the award also included Boris Ostanin , Arkady Dragomoshchenko and others.
Permanent member of the literary prize committee of Andrei Bely. 1983 Andrei Bely Prize Laureate.
The initiator of the creation of the first in the USSR partnership of unofficial writers - Club-81 (1981-1988).
Member of the Coordinating Council of the Leningrad Popular Front (1989-90). The premises of the Club-81 on the street Peter Lavrov was used for weekly meetings of the Coordinating Council of the Leningrad Popular Front.
Later - the organizer of a number of conferences and seminars devoted to problems of the history of Leningrad uncensored literature; compiler (together with V. Dolinin) of the collection “Samizdat” (1993), author (together with B. Roginsky) “Stories of Leningrad uncensored literature: 1950-1980”, author of drafts of the literary encyclopedia “Samizdat Leningrad” (2003) and a three-volume series “Collection: Petersburg prose (Leningrad period), 1960-1980” (2002, 2003).
