History
In the statement about the St. Nicholas Church for 1911 , stored in the Donetsk State Archive, it is written: “The church was built in 1908 according to diligence and at the expense of the workers of the Makaryevsky mine. It is stone with the same bell tower, covered with galvanized iron ". The tragedy was sealed in archival documents, when 2 shifts of miners were killed by a gas explosion at the mine. It was June 18, 1909. The funeral of the dead miners was performed in this temple.
In 1963, by the decision of the Donetsk Regional Council, the St. Nicholas Church was closed and then demolished. [1] .
But the church community, headed by Fr. Alexiy and Fr. Leonty did not give up. Priests and parishioners diligently searched for premises in order to transport church property, part of which seized power, and continue to serve God. A house was found that was sold by one family, but the authorities threatened the owners and they refused. Despite the threats and persecutions, there was one person, Pavel Isaev, who was not afraid to give up his house to house the St. Nicholas Church. And here on the border of the cities of Donetsk and Makeyevka, on ul. Gorbachevsky, was acquired house, which was later converted into a church.
The consecration of the new church was performed on the feast of Sergius of Radonezh Ave. on July 18, 1963. Fr. Alexander Shokalo. Since then, the St. Nicholas Parish has become one of the few spiritual islands in the ocean of a godless Soviet society, thanks to which in difficult times people could pray, baptize, get married.
Recently, the St. Nicholas Church has been gradually reconstructed, repaired, and decorated inside and out. A new altar has already been built, the foundation has been strengthened, internal work is underway to reconstruct the altar. There is a parish school at the church. On Saturdays, classes are held for children living in an orphanage. At the temple, a spiritual library and a video library have been created, the fund of which is constantly updated and replenished by donations from parishioners. [2] .
