Biography

Nikolai Berezhnoy was born in 1909 on the farm Korpinsky (now - Lozovsky district, Kharkov region ) in a peasant family. Received primary education , worked as a livestock specialist. In July 1941, Berezhnoy was called up to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He participated in the Battle of Stalingrad , the liberation of Elista and Rostov-on-Don , the battles on the Mius River, the Donbass and Melitopol operations, the liberation of the Nikolaev region , Poland , the Berlin operation , served in the Stalingrad , Southern , 4th and 1st Ukrainian fronts. By August 1944, Berezhnoy had destroyed 4 tanks , 7 vehicles, 12 machine guns , and about a company of soldiers and officers of the enemy. He distinguished himself during the battles for the Sandomierz bridgehead on the Vistula River. By that time, the foreman Berezhnoy commanded the gun of the 398th artillery regiment of the 118th rifle division of the 5th Guards Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front [1] .

On August 13, 1944, near the village of Vlosnovice , 18 kilometers southeast of the Polish city of Busko-Zdroj, German troops launched a counterattack to destroy the Soviet units in the bridgehead. In the reflection of the counterattack, the calculation of Berezhnoy also participated, destroying 1 tank. During the battle, the close explosion of the enemy projectile was put out of action of the entire calculation, and the gun itself was damaged. Despite being wounded in the shoulder, Berezhnaya did not leave the battlefield, continuing to fire from a machine gun . Finding a nearby weapon, left without calculation, he began to fire from it, knocking out two more tanks [1] .

Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 23, 1944 for "courage, bravery and heroism shown in the struggle against the German fascist invaders" elder Nikolai Berezhnoy was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 4285 [1] .

By the end of the war, 9 tanks, 18 machine guns, 10 guns, 13 armored personnel carriers , 9 vehicles and a large number of enemy manpower were destroyed by the calculation of Berezhnoy. In 1945, in the rank of foreman Berezhnoy was demobilized. In 1948 he joined the VKP (b) . He lived and worked in the village of Orelka Lozovsky district. He died on July 2, 1977 [1] .

He was also awarded the Order of the Red Star , as well as a number of medals [1] .
