Biography

Dmitry Berdov was born on October 12, 1915 in the village of Gagarino [K 1] in a peasant family. After graduation, he worked on the collective farm as a foreman, chairman of the farm. In 1939 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since January 1942 - on the fronts of World War II, in the same year he joined the CPSU (B.) . He began to fight as a sergeant , a mortar crew commander. He participated in the battles on the Bryansk and 1st Ukrainian fronts [2] .

He distinguished himself during the battles for Maloarkhangelsk and the battle on the Kursk Bulge . In February 1943 , during the battles for Maloarkhangelsk, for two days Berdov led a mortar platoon, was an observer and spotter of fire. After the death of the company commander, he took command and successfully completed the combat mission. During the Battle of Kursk, Berdov’s company restrained the enemy’s onslaught for five days, repelling 16 German attacks in the first day alone. He was wounded in the head, but did not leave the battlefield, continuing to command the unit. Subsequently participated in the liberation of Ukraine , including Kiev , and in the battle of the Dnieper . He particularly distinguished himself in the battles for the liberation of the Belotserkovsky district of the Kiev region in December 1943 - January 1944 . By that time, Senior Lieutenant Dmitry Berdov commanded a mortar company of the 78th Infantry Regiment of the 74th Infantry Division of the 40th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front [2] .

On December 31, 1943, Berdov put forward a company to a predetermined line in the area of ​​the village of Shkarovka, Belotserkovsky District, and closed the encirclement of German units. For three days, Byrd reflected the enemy’s constant counterattacks. Having spent mines, Berdov destroyed enemies from a machine gun , and his subordinates from machine guns and carbines . On January 4, 1944, Berdov, having been seriously wounded and surrounded by enemy soldiers, blew himself up with a bunch of grenades along with them. He was buried in the village of Glybochka, Belotserkovsky District [2] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of August 25, 1944, for “exemplary execution of the combat missions of command on the front of the struggle against the Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism shown at the same time”, senior lieutenant Dmitry Berdov was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union [2] .

He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin , World War 1 degree, Red Star , the medal "For Courage" . In memory of him, a memorial plaque was erected on the school building where he studied [2] .
