Battle Path

Fighting route 9 of the Main Intelligence Directorate in the North Caucasian offensive operation. 1942-1943

Fight for the Klukhor Pass

In August 1942, the 121st Mountain Rifle Regiment with the 1st Division of the 256th Artillery Regiment , subordinated directly to the Commander of the 46th Army , was transferred to the Sukhumi area and on 27.08. 1942 for the first time joined the battle with the 1st Mountain Jäger Division "Edelweiss" of the 49th Mountain Rifle Corps of the 17th German Army on the Klukhor Pass in the area of the village of Gvandri.

They were transferred from Batumi to Sukhumi by rail and sea. The gunners were the first to unload. Having disassembled the mountain cannons and loaded them with horses, they immediately advanced to the mountains, to the Klukhor pass . They made a heavy 75-kilometer march along a mountain road previously prepared by Soviet sappers for an explosion. In some places, the road (path) narrowed to 1 meter, meandering over deep gorges with sheer walls. For this reason, the division was forced to move in an extended chain and entered the battle in parts, as the artillery batteries approached their destination, to their battle formations.

Artillerymen of the 1st division of the 256th artillery regiment from positions near the village of Gvandry supported the infantrymen of the 121st gps with their fire.

On the morning of August 21, the advanced company of the 121st Mountain Rifle Regiment, under the command of Senior Lieutenant I.I. Tabakin, attacked the enemy and destroyed up to two companies of the Nazis breaking through. Fierce battles for the Klukhor pass continued until mid-October 1942. In the second half of September, the mountains became sharply colder, heavy snowfall began, which closed the passes. The fighting in the area was discontinued.

On December 13, 1942, the 121st Mountain Rifle Regiment was awarded the Order of the Red Banner . In this battle, the commander of the 121st SSG Major Arshava I.I. was killed (awarded the Order of Lenin ).

Post-war period

Database Creation

After the Georgian-Abkhaz war of 1992-1993, on the basis of the Agreement between the Abkhaz and Georgian sides , as well as the decision of the CIS on the creation in 1994 of the CIS Collective Peacekeeping Force in Abkhazia [1] , CIS peacekeepers, consisting exclusively of Russian military personnel, were introduced into Abkhazia. .

After the operation of Russian and Abkhaz forces in the Kodori Gorge (on the territory of the so-called “ Upper Abkhazia ”) and the recognition of the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia by Russia [2] , it was decided to create a permanent Russian military base.

The base is subordinate to the command of the Southern Military District of the Russian Federation .

Ground

On February 1, 2009, the 131st separate motorized rifle brigade was reorganized and the 7th Krasnodar Red Banner Order of Kutuzov and Red Star was established . On February 17, 2010, the Presidents of Russia Dmitry Medvedev and Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh signed an agreement on a unified Russian military base on the territory of Abkhazia [3] [4] .

In accordance with the Russian-Abkhaz agreement, the combined military base included former peacekeeping facilities and the Bombora military airfield , located in the Gudauta area, a military training ground and part of the sea bay near Ochamchira , joint Russian-Abkhaz military garrisons deployed in the Kodori Gorge and near the Ingurskaya GES . In addition, military-administrative and medical facilities (sanatoriums and rest homes) will be located in Sukhum , Gagra , Gudauta , New Athos , Escher and other settlements of Abkhazia (though there are disagreements about the operation of medical facilities between Russia and Abkhazia - how, for example, with the closure of the reconstruction of the sanatorium "Sukhum" [5] [6] ). All objects are supposed to be used jointly by the Armed Forces of Russia and the Armed Forces of Abkhazia in connection with which payment of the rental base is not expected. The period of operation of the base is 49 years, with the possibility of automatic renewal for subsequent 15-year periods. For combat training, the military training grounds of Gudauta and Nagualou in Abkhazia, as well as Molkin in the Krasnodar Territory of Russia [7] are used .

In 2015, preparatory work began on the construction and arrangement of social and military infrastructure facilities at the military base in Gudauta and preparations for the modernization of the railway infrastructure [8] .

Since 2016, the tank and motorized rifle units of the base have the honorary name “percussion” [9] .
