Biography
Franz Stefani was born in Berlin on April 14, 1842 [2] . He was the son of a wealthy merchant [2] .
Stefani studied at the Königliches Gymnasium , which he graduated in 1859 at the age of 17 years [2] . In 1863 - 1866 , Franz Stefani was in London , Scandinavia , Rotterdam and New York, where he received professional training as an entrepreneur [2] .
In 1880 he moved to Leipzig , where he was director of a wholesale toy store for four years, then entered the publishing house of Julius Klinkhardt to become vice president of this company until his retirement in 1907 [2] .
How Stefani became interested in liverworts remains unknown; he never attended university or received formal training in botany or bryology [2] .
Franz Stefani died on February 23, 1927 [2] .
