Gri-gris (device)

Gri-gris (Device for insurance)

Gri-gr ́ ( jargon: grisha) - a device for organizing insurance and downhill ( dyulfer ) in mountaineering and climbing . The device was developed and patented by the French company Petzl . "Gris-gris" first appeared on the market in 1991. Production of this product was established in Croll, France. Having served faithfully for almost two decades, in 2010 it was discontinued and replaced by the next model - “GRIGRI2” used in the purely sports direction of cable access.

Principle of Operation

Gri-gris (In the photo, the cover of the device is open for illustration. When using the device for insurance or descent, the cover must be closed.)

The rope goes around a round flywheel with an eccentric. Under the action of the load (on the right photo: the load should be applied to the end of the rope going to the right, there are corresponding pictograms on the cover) the handwheel rotates around its axis and presses the rope to the device body. With a sharp jerk, the lock occurs almost instantly, however, with a smooth feed, the rope is etched freely. The device is equipped with a lever that is connected to the flywheel. If the rope is locked in the device, then pulling the lever, you can unlock it. The angle of rotation of the lever can control the speed of etching the rope through the device.

Gri-gris has a small size and light weight (about 225 g) and allows you to work with ropes with a diameter of 10-11 mm [1] .

Compared with other triggers, for example, with eight , it has several advantages: under load, the device locks automatically, does not twist the rope during pickling. The disadvantage of Gris-gris is that braking is possible when descending on a dirty rope. The double rope descent is not possible.
