Embankment History
All general plans developed in Soviet times provided for the construction of the embankment and the city’s access to the Dnieper, but the real implementation of the task was possible only after the war. Creation of the embankment in the city of Dnieper (former Dnepropetrovsk) took place against the general background of a revision of attitude to the surrounding nature. The struggle to maintain the cleanliness of air, water and land has become an important state task.
The design and construction of the Dnepropetrovsk embankment was accelerated due to the need to reconstruct the city sewer system. Back in 1957, the Ukrgiprokommunstroy Institute proposed a project for laying engineering communications on the territory of the existing buildings in the coastal part of the city, among the crooked narrow streets, with the need for significant demolition. The project turned out to be economically unprofitable and difficult to implement. A group of specialists from the Dneprospetsstroy and Dneprograzhdanproekt trusts - engineers B. Milman, A. Levin and architect V. Zuev - proposed laying a single collector for sewage, water, gas pipelines, cables for various purposes and heating mains outside the residential and industrial zones, along the coastline.
To protect the coast from the damaging effects of groundwater, an original solution was proposed - to build a dam from metallurgical waste. The proposal to use the waste from metallurgical production for the benefit of the business, filling it at the base of the embankment, was very timely and effective. On a special 10-kilometer railway line, slag was delivered for laying in a dam .
The bank of the Dnieper in the central part of the city has a soft bend. This circumstance was taken into account when tracing the embankment line. The outer wall adjacent to the water is lined with traditional granite, the parapet is mounted from cast iron grating links fixed between the granite blocks. The trellised parapet improves the visibility of the water surface of the river. A strip of green space with a wide, almost 40-meter ribbon curls along the promenade. On the site between the central and park bridge, near the water itself, there is a terrace 8 m wide, which protects from city noise and heat in hot summer days. Here you can relax under the shady umbrellas of a summer cafe, fish and just go for a walk.

Interesting Facts
- The embankment is the longest in Europe - 30 km ...
- The embankment is divided into three parts: Zavodskaya embankment (from the Parus railway station to the Amur bridge), Sicheslavskaya embankment (from the Amur bridge to the street of the 6th Infantry Division) and the Victory embankment (from the street of the 6th Infantry Division to the South bridge)
- The Merefo-Kherson bridge that crosses the embankment is the only railway bridge in Europe with a curved structure
- On the waterfront are the longest and tallest buildings in the city. This is “Kitayka” (the house looks similar to the Great Wall of China) and 28-story twin towers from which you can see the city center
