The island is located in the southern part of the reservoir, near the source of the Volga . The shape of the island is close to a rectangle, the length from north to south is about 3.5 km, the width in the east-west direction is about 2.5 km, the area is 792 ha. About half of the island is covered in forest. In the east, the island is separated from the administrative center - the village of Kamenniki (the left bank of the Volga) with a strait about 1.5 km wide, along which the main channel (the former Volga channel) passes, from the south also with a shipping strait about 0.7 km wide from the village of Sudoverf and the village Svingino (former Yuga riverbed). From the west and north - the vast water area of the Rybinsk reservoir (opposite banks are not visible beyond the horizon) [1] . In the summer season, communication with the island is only by water, but if there is ice freezing on the reservoir, it is possible to use vehicles. The island's accessibility by water, proximity to the city and, at the same time, the lack of road transport made it a popular holiday destination.

The island was formed in 1940 on the former right bank of the Volga as a result of land flooding by the Rybinsk reservoir. Currently, the entire island is declared a specially protected natural area [2] . There are five villages on the island: Yurshino, Antonovo, Lipnyagi, Obukhovo, Bykovo, occupying the south and center of the island, the northern part of the island is not populated. The total population as of January 1, 2007 was 43 people [3] . The administration center is located in the village of Kamenniki, but about the same accessibility and the village of Sudoverf, both villages have medical outpatient clinics and schools, as well as regular bus routes to Rybinsk. The postal service of the island is carried out by a branch in the village Shipyard [4] :

  • Yurshino is located in the southeast of the island, the point closest to the Shipyard, therefore a pier was built there, on which it received the name and island [5] . The population of the village for 2007 is 3 people. Before filling the reservoir, Yurshino stood at the mouth of the South River. In Yurshin, the remains of the landowner estate have been preserved. Until the mid-19th century, the estate belonged to the Glebov family , which had a lot of land in the Rybinsk district and this was not their only estate, then the estate changed a number of owners. The Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God is in ruins [6] .
  • Antonovo is located on the south coast, opposite the village of Svingino [7] . The population of the village for 2007 is 18 people.
  • Lipnyag are located in the center of the island [8] . The population of the village for 2007 is 8 people.
  • Obukhovo on the eastern outskirts opposite the village of Kameniki, separated from the coast by a small forest [9] .. The population of the village in 2007 - 9 people.
  • Bykovo in the west, but removed from the coast [10] . The population of the village for 2007 is 5 people.
