History
Known since 1430, it was an important cultural center during the Renaissance and Enlightenment, one of the first Bulgarian schools was opened there.
In the Russian-Turkish war of 1877–78. , shortly after the Russian troops crossed the Danube , Elena was occupied by a Russian detachment. When the Turks , in the month of August, went on the offensive and occupied the heights, commanding over Elena and over the path of retreat to Tarnov, the position of Elena became very dangerous. In early November, the Eleninsky detachment, under the command of Major General Dombrowski, was backed up by a reserve. In mid-November, the enemy began to prepare for an attack on Elena, with the goal of diverting the main Russian army from Plevna and hindering the new Russian movement beyond the Balkans . On November 18, Suleiman Pasha concentrated near 30 thousand people near Elena, hoping with these forces to take Elena and then move to Tarnov. At dawn on the 22nd, the Turks opened fire on the forward detachment, and then advanced to attack. After a 2-hour desperate battle, Colonel Lermontov, the front-line detachment commander, began to retreat to Elena. The battalion sent to him for reinforcements was surrounded by Turks, and about 300 people were captured. At 12 noon, the Turks attacked the fortified position of the Russians at Elena. After three hours of resistance, General Dombrowski ordered to retreat and, despite enormous difficulties, managed to reach the village of Yakovtsy at about 6 pm, where the persecution by the Turks ceased. The Eleninsky detachment lost that day more than 1/3 of its composition (55 officers and 1,087 lower ranks) and had to drop 11 guns. Due to his stubborn defense on the way to Tarnov, sufficient forces managed to concentrate, and Suleiman had to abandon his plan. On December 2, the Turks cleared Elena, after which the city, plundered and partly burnt by them, was again occupied by Russian troops, and the Turks were fortified nearby the Maiden’s Grave on the mound [1] .
