Albrecht I (Duke of Saxony)

Albrecht I ( German: Albrecht I ; c. 1190 - October 7, 1260 ) - Duke of Saxony , Elector and Reich Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire . Representative of the Askaniev clan, Albert was the youngest son of the Duke of Saxony Bernhard III and Judit of Poland, daughter of the Polish Prince Meshko III the Old .

Biography

After the death of his father in 1212, the sons of Bernhard divided his land in accordance with the customs of the Askaniev house: the eldest son Heinrich received Anhalt , and the youngest, Albrecht received the duchy of Saxony . Albrecht later supported Emperor Otto IV in his wars against the Hohenstaufen .

July 22, 1227 Albrecht I participated in the defeat of the Danes in the battle of Bornhoeved , after which he was approved by the lord of the counties of Schauenburg and Holsten [1] . After the battle, Albert strengthened and expanded his fortresses and castle in Lauenburg , built by his father in 1182.

In 1260, Albrecht died and was buried in Lenin Abbey . His sons: the eldest, Johann I , and the youngest, Albrecht II , jointly ruled Saxony, and subsequently Johann renounced in favor of his three sons. On September 20, 1296, the duchy of Saxony was divided between the surviving sons of Albrecht into the duchies of Saxe-Lauenburg and Saxe-Wittenberg .

Marriage and children

In 1222, Albert married Agnes of Austria (1206 - 29 August 1238), daughter of the Austrian Duke Leopold VI . Children:

  • Jutta , (1) ∞ November 17, 1239 Eric IV of Denmark ; and (2) ∞ Burchard VIII of Querfurt-Rosenberg
  • Anna Maria (d. January 7, 1252), ∞ Barnim I , Duke of Pomerania
  • Brigitte Jutta (d. April 4, 1266), bride of Otto of Braunschweig, ∞ until 1255 Margrave Johann of Brandenburg .
  • Matilda (d. July 28, 1266), ∞ approx. 1241 Count Johann I of Schauenburg .

In 1238, Albert married Agness of Thuringia, (1205–1246), daughter of the Landgraf Hermann I of Thuringia . From her children:

  • Agnes, ∞ Henry , Prince of Wroclaw.
  • Jutta, ∞ Johann I, Margrave of Brandenburg , (2) ∞ Burhard VIII Rosenburg, Margrave of Magdeburg.
  • Margarita (d. 1265), ∞ 1264 Helmold III, Count of Schwerin .

In 1244, Albert married Helena Braunschweig-Lüneburg (March 18, 1223 - September 6, 1273), daughter of Duke Otto I , widow of the Landgrave of Thuringia German II . Children:

  • Elena (June 1247-12, 1309), (1) ∞ 1266 Henry III , Prince of Wroclaw, and (2) ∞ 1275 Burggrader Frederick III of Nuremberg .
  • Elizabeth (d. February 2, 1306), (1) ∞ 1250 Johann I , Count of Schauenburg, (2) ∞ 1265 Konrad I of Bren.
  • Johann I (July 1248-30, 1285)
  • Albrecht II (1250-25 August 1298),
  • Rudolph (d. After 1269), ∞ Anna, daughter of the Palatine Count of Louis of Bavaria.
