Management (linguistics)

Control in linguistics is a type of syntactic connection in a phrase (along with adjacency and coordination ), in which the main word requires the statement of the dependent in a certain inflectional form (and not coinciding with the form of the main word, as in the situation during coordination). For example, in Russian, the verb “want” requires the use of a noun in the genitive or accusative case : “want fulfillment of desires” , “want a book”, and the verb “dream” - in the preposition with the preposition o (b) : “dream about fulfillment of desires” . Other examples include verbs that give names to cases.

When the main word is changed, the form of the dependent does not change: buy a magazine - bought a magazine - buy a magazine - bought a magazine - buying a magazine. When managing a dependent word can be expressed: noun : break a vase; noun pronoun : tell him; quantitative numerals : divided by five; other parts of speech in the meaning of the noun : care for the sick.

Management model , or valency frame [1] [2] ( eng. Subcategorization frame ) - a scheme that clearly reflects the semantic and syntactic actants of the lexeme and the ways of their morphosyntactic design; in other words, what parts of speech a given word can have as its dependents and in what forms they should stand. Sometimes, an active valency framework (syntactic structures that a given token can control) and a passive one (stable lexical combinations into which this token is included as a managed one) are also distinguished.

The concept of a control model was originally introduced in the theory “Sense ⇔ Text” . Later it was used in computer linguistics .
