The county consists of several islands in the Izu archipelago. The jurisdiction of the district includes the following settlements:
- Miyake Village on Miyakejima Island,
- Mikuradzima village on the island of Mikuradzima
Due to the fact that in 1920 the islands of Miyakejima and Mikuradzima were abandoned by the population, since 1926 they have been subordinate to Oshima County. In 1943, Miyake County was separated from Oshima County into an independent administrative unit.
In September 2000, due to the eruption of the volcano, Miyakedzima Island was completely evacuated; the population was allowed to return there only in February 2005.
