Biography
Early years
Born on August 17, 1958 in the village of Pogorelovka (now Polesskoye ) in the Bereznovsky district of the Rivne region . By nationality, Ukrainian, Orthodox by religion.
He graduated in 1975 from the Grushkovskaya secondary school of the Ulyanovsk district of the Kirovograd region .
In 1981 he graduated from the Faculty of Chemical Technology of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute (major in Chemical Production and Chemical Cybernetics) with a degree in chemical engineering.
From 1981 to 1991 he worked as an ASUV engineer, a senior hardware worker in the workshop of the Rivne Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant .
Civil and Political Activities
In 1988, he became the organizer of the first branch of the Ukrainian Language Society named after T. G. Shevchenko in the Rivne region, and a year later he also initiated the creation of the first branch of the People’s Ruh of Ukraine . From 1991 to 1999, he held the post of head of the Rivne Oblast Organization of People’s Rukh, a member of the Presidium of the Central Office of the People’s Rukh (from 1997 to 1999) and head of the Rivne Oblast Organization of the Ukrainian People’s Party (from 1999 to 2008). Already after the declaration of independence of Ukraine, he changed the date of birth in his passport from August 17 to August 24 ( Independence Day of Ukraine ) [2] .
He was a deputy of the Rivne Regional Council of the first and sixth convocations (1990 and 2006, respectively), as well as a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of the first four convocations [3] . He was a member of the committees for defense and state security, for legislative support of human rights activities and the fight against organized crime and corruption. In the 2004 presidential election, he supported Viktor Yushchenko .
Since February 2001, he was also a member of the special council of the civil initiative “Forum of National Salvation”. From February 4, 2005 to May 18, 2006 he held the post of head of the regional state administration [4] . Since 2008, he led the faction of the Ukrainian People’s Party in the Rivne Regional Council. He had the title of ataman of the organization of the Ukrainian Cossacks “Volyn Sich”. He ran for the mayor of Rivne , but lost the election to Vladimir Khomk, gaining 16% of the vote against 32%.
He was a member of the Presidium of the Motorsport Federation of Ukraine and president of the Volyn-Motor-Sich professional sports motorcycle club.
Church Activities
In the early 1990s, he was the initiator and participant in the violent seizures of the churches of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church .
He was a member of the Supreme Church Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate and the head of the Holy Protection Cathedral , built under his leadership.
Political Opinions
Adhered to nationalist views. His support of the UOC of the Kiev Patriarchate provoked indignation among the parishioners of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate. He actively protested against the idea of the “ Russian world ” and the visit of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill [5] .
Doom
On July 4, 2009 I went fishing with my colleagues near the village of Derazhnoye, Kostopolsky District, Rivne Region. Around 12:00 it began to rain , a thunderstorm began. Chervoniy did not have time to take cover, and lightning struck him. The victim was taken to the intensive care unit of the Rivne district hospital ( Klevan village), but they could not be saved [6] . Vasily Chervony was buried in the courtyard of the Intercession Cathedral.
