Story
The foreground of the picture - on the high bank of a slowly flowing wide and cold river, four horsemen froze.
1941 year . The big city occupied by fascists . A mother with two sons, ten and five years old, returns to a large apartment after their train was bombed. The boys' father is a professor, dean of the university, now at the front in the Red Army . They often come to a German officer Lenz, who in the early thirties was a graduate student of the Father, visited this house and since then is not indifferent to the boys' mother. He supports the family by bringing food. Brothers often look at an album with engravings by Albrecht Durer . This is a huge book, the cover of which is mounted a medal - an award to the Father from the University of Prague . Most often, they look at the engraving "The Horsemen of the Apocalypse ." One day, the youngest with red stylus draws stars on black and white riders ...
In the basement of the house, Mother’s girlfriend was hiding for some time, so as not to be stolen to Germany. Policemen enter the house, one of them, also a pre-war employee of the Father, persuades Mother to go to work with the Germans to save the children. Mother refuses.
The scene of the Father’s favorite pre-war game with the children is repeated many times, they swirl gaily around the light-flooded room: “The moon rotates around the Sun and is always turned to it on one side!” Children's games are becoming increasingly gloomy. With unsmiling faces of adults, they play a “flea market”, “execution of the death penalty by hanging ”. One such game leads to the death of Lenz, when the eldest son threw a grenade into him by mistake.
Mother and children flee the city ...
