Biography
Born in the family of associate professor of the Moscow Pedagogical Institute.
In 1938 he entered and in 1943 graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow University .
Member of World War II . After being drafted into the Red Army, he was sent to courses of military weather forecasters at the Higher Hydrometeorological Institute of the Red Army. The commander of the front weather station, a junior lieutenant , served in units of the 3rd Baltic Front , and went from Pskov to Riga [1] .
In May 1945 he was seconded to the Central Institute of Forecasts of the Red Army, in January 1946 he was demobilized, transferred to work at the Central Institute of Forecasts, a researcher.
In 1946 he entered the graduate school of the Institute of Mathematics of Moscow State University to the supervisor of studies A. N. Kolmogorov .
In 1949 he defended his thesis on the theory of atmospheric turbulence [2] . In 1951 he moved to the Geophysical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, to the Department of Atmospheric Physics, which in 1955 was transformed into the Institute of Atmospheric Physics , a senior researcher, department head, and scientific consultant.
In 1956 he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Physics and Mathematics in the theory of turbulent diffusion [3] , professor (1963). Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1972) in the Department of Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics and Geography (Oceanology). [four]
Since 1965, at the Institute of Oceanology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Russian Academy of Sciences , director of the Institute (1965-1987), since 1987 - head of the laboratory of synoptic processes.
In 2000, he was elected an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
A.S. Monin died on September 22, 2007 . He was buried at the Troekurovsky cemetery in Moscow [5] .
Interesting Facts
In 1958, he wrote and sent a note to the Secretariat of the CPSU Central Committee, in which he sharply criticized the upcoming elections of members of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, expressed a negative and very subjective opinion about a number of fellow scientists and urged the CPSU Central Committee to decisively intervene in the course preparations for elections to the USSR Academy of Sciences [6] .
In 1992, he signed the “ Warning to Humanity ” [7] .
Scientific Contribution
The area of scientific interests is geophysical hydrodynamics . He is the author of fundamental works on weather forecasting, climate theory, numerical modeling of the atmosphere and ocean, problems of ocean hydrodynamics (turbulence, microstructure, surface and internal waves, synoptic vortices , meanders , rings, general ocean circulation), and theories of the Earth's bowels evolution. Organizer of experimental ocean research. He also organized work in the USSR on numerical modeling of the atmosphere of the Earth and Venus .
Created a scientific school on geophysical hydrodynamics.
Membership in scientific organizations
Foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (1976), foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1973), honorary doctor of the University of Gothenburg.
