Biography

Born on January 16 ( January 28 ), 1875 in the city of Rostov-on-Don .

He studied painting and drawing in London (1894–1899), Munich, Paris (1899–1901), and visited Italy [2] .

In 1901-1903 he studied at the Higher School of Art at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg under I. Repin [3] .

Participated in exhibitions since 1902, wrote portraits, genre paintings. In the future, mainly engaged in teaching activities.

In 1907–1916 he taught in St. Petersburg at a private art school organized by him. He was married to the artist Ekaterina Ivanovna Turovoy, who in 1918-1919 was a member of the “Today” artel of artists.

In 1916-1924 he taught at the art school in Zhytomyr, in 1924-1932 at the Art Institute in Kiev.

In 1932–1948, he taught drawing at the Ilya Repin University 's Leningrad Institute . Author of several articles and educational materials on the method of drawing, as well as the book "Problems of educational drawing." In 1948-1950 he also taught at LVHPU . In the years 1930-1940 made a great contribution to the development of the system of art education and the preparation of highly qualified artistic personnel. [four]

In the Great Patriotic War, the son of M. D. Bernstein, Sandro went to the front as a soldier and went missing [5] .

He died on May 9, 1960 in Leningrad.
