The 6th European Football Championship took place on the fields of Italy from 11 to 22 June 1980 . In contrast to the previous tournaments, 8 teams took part in the final stage for the first time: 7 qualifying group winners and the Italian team as the host of the tournament (a similar privilege was given to the hosts for the first time). The scheme of the championship changed as well: 8 teams were divided into two subgroups, the winner of each of which immediately reached the final, and the teams that took second places played bronze medals in the match for third place.

In general, the tournament turned out to be not very interesting, remembering the cautious game of many teams, poor performance (1.93 goals per game), lack of interest from the fans in the matches, as well as unrest in the stands provoked by English fans.
