Biography

Born into a poor peasant family. He studied at the school at the monastery of Red Brod near Miedzilaborets in Slovakia . Obviously, there he first became acquainted with the art of painting by icon-monks who usually lived in monasteries.

Having a good voice and a penchant for science, he learned to be a clerk at a Krasnobrod school. In 1814 he received the place of the church singer at the Greek Catholic Church of St. Barbarians in Vienna (Barbareum). Work there gave him some material independence. In the same year he entered the painting class at the Vienna Academy of United Fine Arts .

Joseph Zmiy is one of the first famous painters of historical Transcarpathia who studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Already in Vienna he was recognized as a good portrait painter.

In 1823, Bishop Grigory Tarkovich appointed him diocesan artist. He became the first diocesan artist of the newly created Preshevsk diocese .

Later Joseph Zmiy-Miklovshik made a trip to Italy, where he lived for two years. Staying there undoubtedly affected his work. After returning to Presov, Joseph works as an artist, often painting portraits. Among them are portraits of the founder of the diocesan library Ivan Kovach, Andrei Khira, and others.

In the fall of 1841, the artist fell ill with typhus and died on December 1 of the same year. He was buried at the Preshevsky cemetery.

Creativity

The initiator of secular painting in Transcarpathia, Joseph Zmiy-Miklovshik, created not only iconostases, murals and altar images, but also portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes from the life of Transcarpathians with a pronounced ethnographic character.

The artist worked in Hungary, his brushes belong to church paintings in many cities.

After returning from Vienna, the artist created many compositions on religious and everyday subjects. He painted pictorial compositions from folk life:

  • "Zemplinskaya wedding",
  • "On gatherings"
  • "The procession for the blessing of water for the Epiphany",
  • "The choice of the bride in Red Broad",
  • “Who will be my husband?” And others.

He illustrated the book “Etnografia Ruthenium” (“Ethnography of Rusyns”) by the Slovak ethnographer Jan Chaplovich.

Among the works on religious subjects, the paintings of 1830, made for the iconostasis in the Abaujnovgrad church, in 1831 the icons in the village. Schiaosegued. The following year, the artist worked in the villages of Zdoba and Ryashev, and in 1834 in Sobopiya and Fiyashi. He worked in Velikiy Sulin in 1835, in the same year he worked on compositions for the side chapels of St. Cross and St. Peter and Paul in the Presov Cathedral. In 1836, the artist performed paintings for the church in Pustagazi, and in 1837 he completed the painting of St. St. Nicholas Barbarians and the Virgin for the church with. Varganevo. In 1838, he updated the images for the temple in Slanskaya New Vesy.
