Mennea, Pietro

Pietro Paolo Mennea ( Italian: Pietro Paolo Mennea ; June 28, 1952 , Barletta - March 21, 2013 , Rome [1] ) - an outstanding Italian sprinter, Olympic champion in 1980 at a 200-meter distance. Two-time winner of the world championships. Three - time European champion in the 100 and 200 meters. Five-time winner of the Mediterranean Games from 1971 to 1983. Winner of the world record in the 200 meter race for 17 years. The current holder of the European record in the 200 meter race [2] .

Mennea was born in the city of Barletta . International sports career began in 1971, when he first won the Italian Championship. Over the years of performances, he became the winner of the national championship 16 times. In the same year, he won the bronze medal at the European Championship in the 4 × 100 meter relay . Shortly before the start of the Olympics, he set European records at 100 and 200 meters. In 1972 he made his debut at the Olympics . In the final run of 200 meters he won a bronze medal. The winner of the games was the famous Soviet sprinter Valery Borzov .

Failed to perform at the 1976 Olympics. In the run for 200 meters, he took the 4th place, and in the relay 4 × 100 meters he took the 6th place. In 1979, he again set the European record in 100 meters and the world record at a distance of 200 meters - 19.72 - this is the 9th place in the list of the fastest runners at this distance in history. The result was set at the Summer Universiade, in the high mountains ( Mexico ). The world record of 17 years was unsurpassed, and it was only in 1996 that the famous American sprinter Michael Johnson beat him, showing a time of 19.66. At the Olympic Games in Moscow, he won the gold medal in the 200 meter race and won bronze in the 4 × 400 meter relay . He took part in the 1984 Olympics, but could not get into the prize-winners. At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Pietro Mennea carried the flag of the national team at the opening ceremony [3] . At the last Olympics for himself, Mennea performed 200 meters in running, but could not reach the final.

After completing a career, he took up politics. From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the European Parliament .

He was buried on March 23 in the Basilica of Santa Sabina .

Memory

  • In 2012, one of the London Underground stations was named after Pietro Mennea.
  • The 2013 Golden Gala competition was named after the great athlete.
