View of the ski resort of Are
The village was founded more than 1000 years ago in the place in the vicinity of which the Vikings and the Sami people lived. In the 18th and 14th centuries, copper mines were located in the vicinity of Auray. Tourism began to develop here from the beginning of the XIV century.

Timeline
- 1882 - Construction of the railway.
- 1891 - Opening of the tourist information center
- 1892 - Opening of a cafe on top of the Åreskutan mountain, which remains Sweden's highest mountain cafe.
- 1910 - The opening of the first funicular , the beginning of the development of Auray as a winter resort, which develops both skiing , sleigh rides and curling .
- 1935 - Creation of a local ski club. The first alpine skiing competition .
- 1940 - Construction of the first towing elevator .
- 1952 - Discovery of new ski slopes.
- 1954 - Holding the World Championships in Alpine skiing , which increased the popularity of Ore as a world ski resort.
- 1966 - Commissioning of the first chair lift.
- 1976 - Opening of a new gondola-type cable car serving the upper part of the ski area. The further development of alpine skiing in Sweden was facilitated by the phenomenal achievements of the famous Swedish skier Ingemar Stenmark .
- 1981 - The establishment of new lifts and the first snow cannons to create a system of artificial snowmaking.
- 1986 - The 13th International Conference of Sami was held in Auray. The national flag of the Sami was approved at it.
- 1989 - Opening of the new Olympia lift by King Charles XVI Gustav and Queen Sylvia .
- 2001 - Construction of two new ski lifts in the central part of the ski resort and the opening of three new slopes.
- 2006 - Replacing the Olympia lift with the world's first TELEMIX gondola lift.
- 2007 - Holding the Alpine Skiing World Championship .
- 2009 - Ore ski resort is named the winner of the competition of the best world ski resorts, held by the British magazine Condé Nast Traveler.
- 2013 - Opening of three new chairlifts.
